The guidelines were released at the London Book Fair, in response to the concerns of academic and trade book authors. They provide suggestions on how authors can use AI in their writing and safeguard their intellectual property. The publisher’s aim with these guidelines is to influence how AI develops and is utilized by writers, instead of being influenced by AI. The guidelines cover a wide range of topics, from using AI to develop prompts to comparing different AI models and disclosing their use.

While the guidelines provide general principles for authors, the FAQs offer more detailed, step-by-step advice. Wiley has been experimenting with AI and participating in its ecosystem for the past 18 months. Their accumulated expertise has helped them develop these guidelines. Their work in the AI field has included licensing content to train AI models and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) – a framework designed to improve the quality of AI-generated responses using authoritative information sources.
