Thought leadership is a valuable way to share one’s knowledge and expertise, according to former Forbes Councils Member Fran Biderman-Gross. Thought leaders are authorities on a specialized topic, method or skill, and are often the go-to people within their organization or industry. They may be given media platforms to share their views and opinions based on their expertise. Thought leaders often demonstrate their knowledge through published books, online columns, blogs, vlogs, or social media. They might be teachers, keynote speakers, podcast hosts, or panelists. They can also be found in communities, engaging in mentorship and leading towards shared goals. A thought leader’s opinion is valuable when it is unique, meaningful, and helpful to others, and it is typically based on their own personal experiences and expertise across intersecting domains. To identify one’s unique contribution as a thought leader, it can be useful to visualize their top skills and knowledge as intersecting circles in a Venn diagram. The overlap of these circles is where the unique contribution lies. After identifying this contribution, it should be practiced and honed.
