OpenAI has launched new tools aimed at helping developers and enterprises create AI agents, automated systems that independently complete tasks, using the company’s AI models and frameworks. These tools are part of OpenAI’s new Responses API, which allows businesses to develop bespoke AI agents capable of web searches, scanning company files, and navigating websites. OpenAI’s Responses API is set to replace the company’s Assistants API by the first half of 2026. Recently, OpenAI introduced two AI agents in ChatGPT, Operator and deep research, which offered a preview of what AI agents can accomplish, but showed limitations in terms of autonomy. With the Responses API, OpenAI aims to sell access to the components that power AI agents, enabling developers to build their own applications. The company hopes that developers can create applications that feel more autonomous than the current offerings.
